OVERVIEW

Doxy-PEP (Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a preventive strategy recommended for people who may be at higher risk of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

When taken within 72 hours after condomless sex, doxycycline can help reduce the risk of infections caused by certain bacteria, including chlamydia, syphilis, and gonorrhea.

Doxy-PEP does not prevent against HIV or viral infections. Condom use, regular testing, and open communication with your partner remain the best protection.

TREATMENT: HOW DOXY-PEP WORKS

Doxycycline is an antibiotic that can prevent certain bacterial STIs from taking hold in your body when taken after a potential exposure.

HOW TO USE DOXY-PEP

  1. Take one 200 mg dose (usually 2 tablets of 100 mg doxycycline) as soon as possible after condomless sex.

  2. Do not take it later than 72 hours (3 days) after exposure.

  3. Always take with food and a full glass of water to reduce the chance of stomach upset.

  4. Do not use more than one dose for the same exposure.

  5. Continue regular STI testing and safer sex practices.

USE ANTIBIOTICS CAREFULLY

Antibiotics are powerful tools, but they work best when used responsibly.

Why caution is important

Overuse of antibiotics can lead to antimicrobial resistance, making infections harder to treat in the future—for you and for everyone.

Use only when recommended

Doxy-PEP is for people with higher-risk sexual exposures, not for everyday use or as a substitute for condoms.

Follow medical guidance

Your provider will guide you on whether Doxy-PEP is appropriate and how to use it safely.
